My Story

“To thine own self be true”

Shakespeare (Hamlet)

The early part of my working life post University was spent pursuing an exciting, fast-paced international career in global business development and marketing. I worked in Europe, North and South America, as well as occasional trips to other more far-flung places, immersing myself in local culture and opportunities, developing sales channels and leading teams to facilitate international brands expand their global reach.

My middle career, during mid 30’s- early 50’s, saw me juggle work and family commitments, setting up and running my own consultancy business Winning Sales, as well as becoming a business coach and mentor to start-up entrepreneurs through Newcastle University - a very fulfilling and gratifying period in my life. I felt blissfully in control of my professional destiny and made a reasonably good stab at work-life balance juggling motherhood, marriage, distant family relationships, friendships and aging / dying parents and close relatives.

However, in recent years, several events co-conspired to lead me to recognise a need for a shift in gear and transition. I now recognise this as “Middlessence” – a natural mid-life period of transition, a voyage of self-discovery - questioning, exploring, floundering and ultimately flourishing. I found an incongruency in a number of areas of my life, where I felt I wasn’t being true to the “real Jackie” – it took some time to actually rediscover “me” and truly explore the notion of “authentic self”. If I’m being honest, I had gotten a bit lost in the “pleasing” process of keeping everyone else’s plates spinning and maybe dropping some of my own. Hearing and answering the call to pause, step back, reflect and refocus has been transformational.

This difficult and sometimes painful journey has been so worthwhile. I finally feel I am living authentically and truly being the me I was born to be, every single minute of every hour, every day of my life. This sense of owning who I am and living more courageously is so liberating and I wake up every day grateful to be alive and curious about what lies ahead. I also recognise this is a continuing journey of transition, learning, growth and change which will bring both joy and sadness but this is life, this is living, this is flourishing, and I am so glad to be on this path.

My passion in life is people and my purpose going forward is to support humankind’s flourishing in a very challenging world. I have invested my time and energy over last three years into absorbing everything I can about positive psychology (PP), currently completing my Masters in Applied PP (MAPP) and also undertaking a professional PP coaching qualification. I am currently pursuing my interest and qualifications in yin yoga and mindfulness.

I embark on the next stage of my business career as someone committed to leadership and personal coaching focused on thriving business owners, flourishing teams and positive business practises which help to create a better world where humanity and common decency rules!

Let the next chapter begin…

Polonius:

“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.

(Hamlet, Act-1, Scene-III, 78–82)

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

"Jackie is part strategist, part thought provoker, part cheerleader. She has a masterful knack for knowing when to employ these various skills to bring out a clarity of purpose and direction that is often hard to pinpoint on your own. She has a way of repackaging your own, sometimes confusing, thoughts in a way that adds meaningful direction. Both as part of our recruitment panel and working personally with the management team Jackie has brought real value to Calibrate and several of our team members."

- Susie McDonald, CEO, Calibrate Inc. Ltd
